When AI Overviews show up for dental searches
AI Overviews tend to appear on question-style searches like "does a dental implant hurt" or "how long does Invisalign take." Searches like "dentist near me" usually lean on the map results instead. Google itself says AI Overviews "often don't trigger," and only show when its systems decide they add something. So your treatment and FAQ content matters for the first kind of search, and your Business Profile matters for the second.
What Google says is required
We opened Google's guide to AI features and your website before writing this. The key lines:
- "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary."
- To be shown as a supporting link, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."
- "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."
The same page lists the basics that still matter, including allowing crawling in robots.txt and your CDN, keeping important content in text form, making structured data match the visible page, and keeping your Business Profile up to date. It also says traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Performance report, under the "Web" search type.
Treatment pages that answer first
Each main treatment deserves its own page that opens with a direct answer. A good implant page says who places implants at your practice, what the first visit involves, roughly how long the process takes, cost ranges if you publish them, and which insurance plans you take. Patients ask these exact things, and so do AI tools on their behalf.
Google Business Profile and consistent details
Keep hours, services, categories and accepted insurance current in your Google Business Profile. Then make the same details match on Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Yelp, Apple Maps and your own site. Out-of-date holiday hours or an old phone number on one directory is enough to muddy the picture.
Expertise and trust signals
Add real dentist bios with credentials and the treatments each one provides, and show when clinical pages were last reviewed. Reviews matter to patients and show up as sources in AI answers.
A compliance note: when you reply to reviews, don't confirm that someone is a patient or mention any treatment details, even if they did first. Keep replies general and take the conversation offline. If you're unsure, check with your compliance advisor. Testimonials on your own site should follow your state board's advertising rules.
Schema for dental and med spa sites
Schema.org has a Dentist type. Google's LocalBusiness docs recommend using the most specific subtype you can. Med spas often fit MedicalBusiness or DaySpa. Here's an illustrative example for a made-up practice:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Dentist",
"name": "Example Family Dental",
"url": "https://www.example.com/",
"telephone": "+1-555-010-0000",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "100 Example Ave",
"addressLocality": "Sarasota",
"addressRegion": "FL",
"postalCode": "00000",
"addressCountry": "US"
},
"openingHoursSpecification": [{
"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
"dayOfWeek": ["Monday", "Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday"],
"opens": "08:00",
"closes": "17:00"
}]
}
</script>
Schema.org doesn't have a standard property for accepted insurance plans that Google uses, so list your plans in plain text on the page. And keep in mind that Google says no special schema is needed for AI features. The value of schema is keeping your facts consistent and machine-readable.
Beyond Google: ChatGPT and Perplexity
Patients also ask ChatGPT and Perplexity. Both search the web and cite sources. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so check that your robots.txt and any security plugin aren't blocking it. Then look at which sites each tool cites for your area. That tells you which directories to fix first.
How to check whether you show up
Write ten patient questions with your city in them, such as "dentist near me that takes Delta Dental in Sarasota," "best med spa in Tampa for Botox," or "emergency dentist open Saturday in Bradenton." Run them in Google, ChatGPT with search on, and Perplexity. Note whether your practice appears, who else does, and which sources are cited. Repeat on another day. In Search Console, keep an eye on the Performance report for your treatment pages.

FAQ
Can my dental practice appear in Google AI Overviews?
Yes. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, with no additional technical requirements. Being eligible doesn't guarantee you'll be shown.
Do AI Overviews show for 'dentist near me'?
Sometimes, but 'near me' searches usually lean on the map results. AI Overviews show up more on question-style searches about treatments, costs and recovery.
Do I need special schema or an AI file for AI Overviews?
No. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Does Dentist schema help?
It helps keep your practice details clear and consistent, and Google recommends the most specific LocalBusiness subtype. It won't force your practice into an AI answer.
How do I check whether AI Overviews cite my practice?
Search the questions patients ask, with your city, and look at the links in any AI Overview. Traffic from AI features is also included in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type.
Do patient reviews affect AI answers?
Review sites are often among the sources AI answers cite, so accurate, recent reviews help. Never buy reviews, and keep review replies free of any patient details.
Does this apply to med spas too?
Yes. The same basics apply: clear treatment pages, a complete Business Profile, consistent details and crawler access. Use the schema type that best fits, such as MedicalBusiness or DaySpa.
