AI visibility audit vs DIY vs hiring an agency
Run the free AI visibility check
The short answer: which option fits you
DIY fits a tight budget and an owner with a few spare hours. A fixed-price audit fits someone who wants a diagnosis and a ranked plan before spending more. An agency fits a business in a competitive market that needs ongoing work and can't do it in-house.
Option 1: do it yourself
You can do a lot for free. Test 10 to 15 buyer prompts by hand (our guide: how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business). Run the free checker for AI crawler access, llms.txt and schema. Keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere, and earn real mentions on third-party sites.
The cost is your time, and AI answers vary between runs, so one test can mislead. For many small businesses, DIY is enough.
Option 2: a fixed-price audit
An audit measures which prompts you appear for, on which engines, against which competitors, which sources the engines cite, and which fixes matter most. Ours: a $49 Snapshot, or the full audit at $497, with a $297 launch price for the first 3 clients. Audit + Fixes is $1,497. See pricing for what each includes.
Other audit providers exist at different prices. First Page Sage's 2026 report (an agency publication) lists one-time GEO audits at $1,500 to $12,000, typically over 2 to 6 weeks (source, published October 7, 2026, checked October 30, 2026).
Option 3: an SEO or GEO agency
A retainer typically covers content, outreach and ongoing measurement, usually with a minimum term. It's worth it in a competitive metro or when your team can't do the work. Good agencies can do the work an audit only recommends.
What it costs, from public sources checked October 30, 2026:
- First Page Sage's GEO & AEO Pricing Statistics: 2026 Report (published October 7, 2026) puts its Starter tier, for local and small businesses, at $1,800 to $4,200 a month with a typical 3-month minimum. It puts home services at a typical $1,800 to $7,500 a month and legal at $4,000 to $18,500. First Page Sage is itself an agency, so treat these as one seller's survey.
- For traditional SEO (not GEO), Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers reports local SEO averaging $1,557 a month, with agencies at $1,819. Ahrefs sells SEO software.

Questions to ask any provider before paying
- Do you guarantee rankings or recommendations? (If yes, that's a red flag.)
- Do you run each prompt more than once, or on different days?
- Will you show which sources the AI engines cited?
- Who owns the pages you create?
- What's the minimum term?
Our recommendation by situation
- Solo practice in a small town: DIY plus a $49 Snapshot.
- Several locations or a competitive metro: an audit, then decide.
- Budget but no time: audit + fixes, or an agency.

FAQ
Is AI search optimization worth paying for?
It depends on how many of your customers ask AI tools for recommendations and how far behind competitors you are. Measure first: test buyer prompts yourself or buy a Snapshot, then decide.
How much do GEO or AI SEO agencies charge?
Published figures vary widely. First Page Sage's GEO & AEO Pricing Statistics 2026 report (published October 7, 2026, by an agency) puts monthly retainers for local and small businesses in the low thousands of dollars, with a typical 3-month minimum (see the sourced figures above), and one-time GEO audits at $1,500 to $12,000. Can I do it myself?
Often, yes. Test 10 to 15 buyer prompts by hand, run a free crawler and schema check, keep your business details consistent, and earn real third-party mentions. It costs time, and results vary between runs.
Do you guarantee results?
No. Nobody can honestly promise rankings or recommendations. Be wary of any provider that does.
