Short answer: Google says AI Overviews need nothing beyond normal Search: your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. For a dental practice that means treatment pages that answer patient questions plainly, a complete Google Business Profile, and the same hours, insurance and contact details everywhere. ChatGPT and Perplexity also need to be able to crawl you. Work through the checklist below, then test real patient questions on more than one day.

This is the short version of what we check for dental practices. Print it, hand it to whoever runs your website, and tick things off. Many items take only a few minutes to check.

1. Can Google and the AI tools reach your site?

Google's guide to AI features is clear that there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." To show up as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. So this first step does most of the work.

2. Does each main treatment have its own page?

Implants, Invisalign, crowns, whitening, emergency visits and pediatric care each deserve a page that opens with a direct answer. Patients ask "does an implant hurt," "how long does Invisalign take" and "how much is a crown without insurance," and AI tools go looking for pages that answer those questions. On each page, cover:

3. Is your Google Business Profile complete?

"Dentist near me" searches lean on the map results, so this matters even when no AI Overview appears.

4. Do your details match everywhere?

Check your name, address, phone, hours, dentists and accepted insurance on your site, Google, Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Yelp, Apple Maps and your insurers' provider directories. A dentist who retired last year, or old Saturday hours on one listing, is enough to make an AI answer hedge or leave you out.

5. Do you show real expertise?

6. Is your schema accurate?

Use Dentist for a dental practice, and MedicalBusiness or MedicalClinic where they fit better. Google's LocalBusiness docs recommend the most specific subtype. Google also says schema isn't required for AI features. Its value is keeping your facts consistent and machine-readable. This is an example for a made-up practice:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Dentist",
  "name": "Example Family Dental",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "addressLocality": "Raleigh",
    "addressRegion": "NC",
    "addressCountry": "US"
  },
  "openingHoursSpecification": [
    {
      "@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
      "dayOfWeek": [
        "Monday",
        "Tuesday",
        "Wednesday",
        "Thursday"
      ],
      "opens": "08:00",
      "closes": "17:00"
    }
  ]
}
</script>

There's no standard schema property for accepted insurance that Google uses, so list your plans on the page itself.

7. Have you tested real patient questions?

Write ten questions with your city in them, such as "dentist near me that takes Delta Dental in [city]," "emergency dentist open Saturday in [town]" or "best place for Invisalign in [city]." Run them in Google, ChatGPT with search on, and Perplexity. For each one, write down:

Run the same questions again on another day, because AI answers change often. In Search Console, AI feature traffic is counted in the Performance report under the "Web" search type.

A note for med spas

The same checklist applies. Give each treatment its own page (Botox, fillers, laser, facials), say who performs it and what credentials they hold, and use the schema type that fits best, such as MedicalBusiness or DaySpa.

FAQ

Can my dental practice appear in Google AI Overviews?

Yes. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, with no additional technical requirements. Being eligible doesn't guarantee you'll be shown.

Do AI Overviews show for 'dentist near me'?

Sometimes, but 'near me' searches usually lean on the map results. AI Overviews show up more on question-style searches about treatments, costs and recovery.

Do I need special schema or an AI file for AI Overviews?

No. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Does Dentist schema help?

It helps keep your practice details clear and consistent, and Google recommends the most specific LocalBusiness subtype. It won't force your practice into an AI answer.

How do I check whether AI Overviews cite my practice?

Search the questions patients ask, with your city, and look at the links in any AI Overview. AI feature traffic is also counted in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type.

Do patient reviews affect AI answers?

Review sites are often among the sources AI answers cite, so accurate, recent reviews help. Never buy reviews, and keep review replies free of any patient details.

Does this apply to med spas too?

Yes. The same basics apply: clear treatment pages, a complete Business Profile, consistent details and crawler access. Use the schema type that fits best, such as MedicalBusiness or DaySpa.
